Hesperia Disabled Vet Plans 2,300 Mile Hike To Georgia
The Effort Will Raise Money and Awareness For Wounded Vets
Tim Callaghan, A 49-yo disabled ARMY Desert Storm veteran, has announced his intention to hike 2,364 miles from Hesperia City Hall to the tiny town of Tybee Island, Georgia. His goal is to make their journey an opportunity to raise awareness and $25,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project and PTSD Research.
"Almost every American has been touched in some way by a disabled veteran. Everyone knows someone - a friend, family member, church member or co-worker, who has suffered from PTSD, or been disabled in war. As President Reagan has said, "You can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone" Mr. Callaghan said. "It's in that spirit that he honestly believes we can make a difference," he continued.
Mr. Callaghan has begun his rigorous daily training to prepare for the long hike, which he refers to as the "Mission." He intends to begin their hike on March 19th, 2016.
In addition to his rugged training, Mr. Callaghan is reaching out to corporate sponsors to help fund the effort. He is appealing to High Desert residents, businesses and veteran's, to donate necessary supplies and equipment for the hike. Such items as food, backpacks, communications equipment, supplies and gas money for their support & provisions vehicle are all being accumulated and organized. His very first donation received was an American Flag from a Hesperia military surplus store, which they will carry throughout their hike. Additional support and Sponsorship is pouring in from Got ‘EM Fitness of Hesperia CA, and Ultimate Fitness Hesperia CA.
"It's really not much different than planning a military mission. We need strong supply lines to accomplish our goals. But I can tell you that asking for help seems tougher than the hike itself," Mr. Callaghan said.
